This is a musical about male prostitutes in Baltimore, Maryland. It takes place somewhere between approx. 1955 and 1980. That is, pre-Aids, pre-internet.
It is composed of spoken sections followed by songs in various styles. It is influenced by the Wizard of Oz, the book "City of Night" by John Rechy and Prokofieff's Peter and The Wolf. I chose the title "Fag Heaven" to be ironic and not to be insulting.
I used to see these types of guys hanging out on the steps of Grace and St Peter's Church in Baltimore when visiting my mother who lived nearby. I never really knew what they were doing; someone told me they were male hustlers, but that didn't mean anything real to me. Later after reading John Rechy's "City of Night", I realized what it was that I'd actually seen. I always liked the fact they were seemingly unafraid of judgement. Since these men were total social outcasts it seemed a perfect subject to me. Though rejected, they were doing something they felt like doing; this seems to me to be a certain form of freedom.
